We suspected that a drop in the Assistant Axis might be a symptom of the Persona Selection Model breaking down in the face of RLVR. We also discuss pitfalls of using AUROC on feature projections and why that initially led us astray. Intro Koby Lewis, the PhD student I work with at DRAGN, has spent the last few weeks using an adapted version of Lu et al. 's pipeline to extract the Assistant Axis from GPT-OSS 120B, and finding a setup where it reliably reward-hacks on coding tasks. The goal is to find whether, on the turn where the model begins to reward-hack, the model's projection onto the Assistant Axis is higher than that of the same turn in a case where it didn't. If it does, this might suggest that the Persona Selection Model breaks down in the face of RLVR. He found, surprisingly, that this Assistant Axis projection is actually typically hig
